Born in Oakland, she started her career as a child model and background dancer, and made her television debut with the Disney show Rocky Blue. Her feature film debut came in 2017 with the superhero film Spider-Man: Homecoming, which she went on to star in its sequels.

Her portrayal of the character of Rue Bennett in the hit show Euphoria made her the youngest recipient of the PrimeTime Emmy Award. In 2022, Time magazine also named her as one of the most influential figures of the world.
