The 1996 action thriller movie, Mission: Impossible, directed by Brian De Palma, which was a spinoff movie of the spy thriller TV show of the same name, launched the popular Mission: Impossible film franchise. The franchise centers around the lead character Ethan Hunt, a special agent played by Tom Cruise, who is tasked with various missions to stop ruthless criminals from spreading chaos and destruction. Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Michelle Monaghan, and Rebecca Ferguson are some of the recurring characters from the franchise.

The Mission Impossible franchise is also famous for the depiction of Cruise’s death-defying stunt sequences. The opening rock climbing scene from the second movie and the HALO jumping sequence from Mission: Impossible- Fallout, which was taken in a single take, are some of the many high stakes stunt sequences featured in the franchise.

Prominent filmmaker John Woo, who is known for his violent action movies directed the second installment of the series, Mission: Impossible 2, while JJ Abrams directed the third movie and Brad Bird directed the fourth movie, Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol. Christopher McQuarrie has directed all the subsequent films including Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible: Fallout, the latest film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and its upcoming sequel.
