Review:

After six episodes of consistently well-executed episodes, Dexter: New Blood has encountered its first minor blip. This does not imply that the quality has diminished, instead, it is an indication that it has finally become a victim to the extremely high standards that the series set has for itself. The nail-biting drama offered in the previous episode is in direct contrast with the relatively slow-paced narrative of episode 7. However, it is by no means a filler episode, a tactic often deployed by showrunners to make up for lack of content. For Dexter: New Blood, there is enough evidence to suggest that the episode is a plot device to aid the narrative structure. It is likely that the episode is a circuit-breaker, in a manner of speaking, to set the foundations for an exciting conclusion to the season.

The character development of the primary ensemble is paying dividends as each character is given ample screen time to show their worth to the overall narrative. For instance, Angela’s arc certainly has more value than just being Dexter’s girlfriend while Podcaster Molly could play a crucial role in how the story progresses in the upcoming episodes. There’s also a possibility that Audrey could play a pivotal role in how Harrison’s character develops further. However, the character that benefits most from this episode is Kurt as there is a significant emphasis on his backstory that acts as an exposition to several unanswered questions about Kurt.

In the Morgan household, things appear to be heading in the wrong direction as Harrison drifts further away from Dexter. The story seems to hint that Dexter could finally reveal his true self to Harrison. If indeed that were to happen, it has the potential to create several problems that Dexter might not be able to handle. It is unlikely that showrunner Clyde Phillips will take inspiration from the books with regards to how Dexter and Harrison’s story pans out. Regardless, Dexter: New Blood is heading towards an exciting finale as it enters its final stretch.

Verdict:

Episode 7 of Dexter: New Blood may not be as riveting and fast-paced as compared to the previous episodes but it nevertheless offers enough content to keep the viewers invested in what is to come in one of the best live-action tv series of the year.
