Gabriel Iglesias Legend of Fluffy story: As he celebrates 27 years of being a comedian, Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias reminisces about the sacrifices he made in his early days; how he’s always stuck to his motto to entertain and not offend, which explains his longevity and then proceeds to tell a few stories in his trademark style about the “different” times we are in. He talks about being able to maintain a certain level through the years and going from never running into trouble for being nice to now struggling with politically correct speech, among others.
Gabriel Iglesias Legend of Fluffy review: In his latest Netflix special – his fourth for the streamer - which was taped at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, to celebrate 27 years of him as a comedian, Gabriel Iglesias talks about the need to now be extra mindful. It is, perhaps, why the Legend of Fluffy, his 90-minute standup show has too few laughs that were too far between.
27 years is, no doubt, a tremendous achievement, which Fluffy reminds his audience time and again. But there was more than just talent and perseverance at play, he adds, telling the packed hall that it was made possible only because he chose to swallow his pride on a few ‘racist’ occasions, so that show organizers and audiences could see what he brings to the table and call him back for more.
The rest of the show is the usual Fluffy brand of comedy – anecdotes from day-to-day life, and his take on them. There’s stuff about pronouns, being schooled to be politically correct, his super-guarded heart and lack of interest in a committed relationship, wanting a woman with “original factory settings” - preferably a big girl with whom he can agree on the temperature on the thermostat - being a gun owner and more.
The problem is that precious little of this is funny enough to warrant a laugh. What works is that Fluffy is a very likeable guy, who works the stage and his audience like a charm; there is also hardly any profanity – 5 F-words and only 1 or 2 penis mentions (in the context of the number of toilets in his former home) - so, hearing him tell these stories, with all those voice impressions, is quite pleasant.
That’s not going to cut it every time though.
Gabriel Iglesias Legend of Fluffy verdict: There’s a certain template to a Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias show and he doesn’t deviate from it in the Legend of Fluffy. His stories are clean and sound interesting in his energetic presentation, but most don’t have the desired effect. It’s just all too simple and leaves one hoping if only he’d push the envelope just a tad more. He says he’s here to entertain and have fun; well, he’s for sure laughing all the way to the bank.
