Review:
The fourth episode of Killing Eve season 4 seemingly sets the ball rolling for some pivotal moments viewers can look forward to in the episodes to come, in a way that excites and intrigues. As the protagonists make inroads in their personal journeys, the writing highlights some compelling aspects of their characters as well.
Of all the intriguing stories, Eve’s plays out in a way that really shows her growth compared to the previous seasons. She takes bolder steps, unrecognisable from the more controlled, subdued persona she started with in the first season. And she does so without compromising the mission at hand. After making a breakthrough in her investigation into Lars Meier, she decides to confront Hélène yet again, and the chemistry between the two takes palpable proportions. Eve’s interactions with Hélène really showcase her newfound intensity, which reaches new heights in this episode.
With Villanelle’s recent arrest, her story too had a lot of promise, and the writers did not disappoint on that end either. We see her falter and become more unsure of herself after Eve’s ‘betrayal’ and this takes her back to Carolyn. Although the two start off on a rough note with Villanelle trying to kill the latter, they very quickly turn things around, Carolyn’s unfailing charm and sophistication in full display yet again. As both she and Eve, in their own ways, learn some crucial information about Meier, viewers can expect this breakthrough to translate itself into an integral part of their mission of bringing the Twelve down.
Konstantin too is hit with a bout of déjà vu, training the new recruit coming with its own set of challenges for him, although it might come as a welcome change from Villanelle. But even though she’s different, some of the tricks she has up her sleeves seem eerily similar to Villanelle.
The latest episode is able to keep a steady pace while depicting the individual breakthroughs, although there are some moments where things can get predictable. But with the story making crucial headway this episode, keeping the pace going in the coming episodes could help the show end on as strong a note as it started.
Verdict:
The fourth episode of Killing Eve season 4 features some compelling moments and breakthroughs, where the main characters shine in the best of ways in spite of some moments of predictability.
