Mutton Soup Story

Sriram (Raman) is a financier known for his harsh debt collection methods, which earn him many enemies. He often faces attacks but manages to survive each time. Through Facebook, he meets Satyabhama (Varsha Viswanath), and they fall in love. On Valentine’s Day, a group called Gajagang Dal forces them to get married. When Sriram brings her home, his mother throws him out. He starts a new life with Satyabhama, but soon he’s attacked again, this time with acid, leaving his face disfigured. Satyabhama takes care of him, while his cousin Shivaram (Gemini Suresh), a police officer, investigates the case. Who attacked Sriram? What is the Mutton Soup theory all about? To know the answers, watch the film on the big screens.

Mutton Soup Review

Mutton Soup has been written and directed by Rama Chandra on a low budget. Though he had a naïve team and little help with production design, he did his best with the film. Not many know that Mutton Soup is based on a real-life incident that occurred in the Telugu states a few years ago.

Inspired by that event, he has crafted a thriller about a financier who leaves behind crime and chooses the path of love. The way the story connects to the “mutton soup” theme is neatly handled in the setup. However, the lack of strong actors makes the film somewhat disappointing. The conflict point is good, but the way it is brought into the narrative could have been much better.

Still, director Rama Chandra handles a few crime scenes interestingly. The major twist in the film and the way Gemini Suresh investigates the case are showcased effectively. His entry as a cop makes the proceedings engaging for the audience.

There are a few unnecessary scenes added just for the sake of it, which derail the flow from time to time. Some forced emotions in the first half also test the audience’s patience. The family drama could have been more intense in the setup. However, the second half is passable and offers some decent thrills. The way Gemini Suresh handles the setup and how all the dots connect in the end make things much better.

Coming to the performances, Raman plays two roles and does well. Compared to his previous films, he shows clear improvement. Varsha Vishwanath, who plays the female lead, needs to improve as she lacks focus in several scenes. On the other hand, Gemini Suresh, known for smaller roles, gets a significant part here and carries the film effectively on his shoulders. His performance in the investigative sequences is impressive. Gopal Maharshi is neat in his role, while the rest of the cast is average.

The production values are below par and could have been much better. It’s evident that the director had budget constraints and had to compromise on the setup. The editing and dialogue are neat, with the second half being better executed.

In a way, Mutton Soup is a film with a decent setup and some engaging moments in the second half. But to get there, viewers must endure a tedious first half that lacks a proper narrative flow.

Mutton Soup Verdict:

On the whole, Mutton Soup has an interesting premise, but the lack of noted actors takes things down in key areas. But there are a few thrills that have been narrated well and end the film on a passable note.
