Rambo in Love Review: Payal Chengappa shines in this otherwise silly, bland, and aimless series

Rambo in Love is a seven-episode series directed by Ajith Reddy. Four episodes are now available for streaming, and every Friday, a new episode drops on JioHotstar and OTTplay Premium. 

At the onset, Rambo in Love feels like a simple and cute office romance with a predictable setting. But the execution lacks seriousness. The approach is silly, the characters are over the top, and the performances are cringeworthy.

As director Ajith aimed to give the series a fun narrative, he overlooked the basic emotions, making the show a boring and mundane watch. Despite a runtime of under 25 minutes per episode, each one feels like it takes forever to finish. 

There is no seriousness in the plot, and the startup company is made to look like a joke. In the opening episode, a foreign investor is introduced, and the scenes around her are so poorly handled that you immediately sense how the rest of the series will unfold.

Things begin to pick up only when the female lead, Payal Chengappa, enters the story. Her character is well-designed, and one expects sparks to fly when ex-lovers meet. Unfortunately, that never happens, and the series drags on without reason. 

There is no proper conflict, and the emotions shown fail to register. One major drawback is that you cannot binge-watch the series, as the key episodes are being released weekly, which further kills the interest.

Payal’s reactions to her past with Rambabu make sense, but his character lacks clarity. His behavior feels inconsistent, and his role needed seriousness and depth, which is never showcased. There is also no real chemistry between the lead pair.

Coming to performances, Payal Chengappa looks beautiful and has a strong screen presence. Whenever she is on screen, things feel more meaningful. The way she talks, dresses up, and emotes is very good in the series. 

On the other hand, Abhinav Manikanta is over the top and fails to capture the essence of the character. This is more the director’s fault than his, as he is made to look silly and out of place. For someone playing the head of a company, his portrayal does not fit the bill. The supporting cast is equally weak and forgettable.

On the technical side, the production design is good, and the camerawork is passable. The dialogues are decent, though the editing doesn’t add much value. The best part is that only four episodes are out so far, but even they feel bland and boring.

Rambo in Love Verdict

On the whole. Rambo in Love is a silly, over-the-top, and aimless office romance that does not have anything going its way. Apart from Payal Chengappa's screen presence and sincere performance, this series is a tedious watch and should be avoided.
