Rambo movie review:

At some point in Rambo, a film which really strives to incorporate kickboxing sports into its narrative, the titular character simply and in the most natural way reads the minds of audience. When Gautham who is declaring ransoms to anyone who gets hold of Malar is one hand, Malar herself increases the bid by crores for not tipping her off. Rambo spills into a moment of reality when he questions how the duo seems to be having so much money. This scene is also unintentionally funny, and simply one of the best parts of Rambo. If calling one of the least connected links to the storyline, the best, then leaving it to your imagination of what Rambo is really threading on.

The film’s recurring feature is illogicality and that starts right from the beginning. A wealthy and influential father, when told that his son has secured the second rank, does not encourage his son to be first, or even appreciate his par excellent marks. But is quick to know the first ranker and conspire the murder of a child. Rambo reeks of such lethargic and bizarre ideas, that you don’t want to seem to take this film too seriously even as it talks about societal issues and serious matters.

Rambo is also a film which features its protagonist and antagonist as kickboxers. With a self-defence art forming the protagonist’s main identity, it is quite astonishing to see how when the hero is danger (or rather when the heroine is in danger), he quickly switches to the slow-motion, mass action stunt sequences, not to forget the swoosh-swish edit cuts, rather than actually putting the martial arts talent into usage. Rambo becomes a victim to such nit-picking when its actual storytelling attempt is fragile and weak, not to mention the loopholes and poor characterisations.

Rambo movie verdict:

Rambo is a bland action drama that neither is elevated by strong characterisations nor clarity in its story. The narrative of the film too doesn’t add up to an engaging watch, making Rambo a failed attempt with unclear intentions. The film’s dilly dally with humour at awkward places, and with bare minimum performances, Rambo misses both its punches and its purpose.
