Sarangapani (Priyadarshi) is a salesman at a car dealership and is in love with his boss, Mythili (Roopa Koduvayur). Things change when Mythili proposes to him, and the parents also agree to the proposal. But not many know that Sarangapani is a firm believer in astrology. Ahead of his wedding, a reputed astrologer reads his hand and states that Sarangapani will commit a brutal murder in his life. Stunned by this revelation, Sarangapani decides to murder a random person so that the bad omen in his life gets removed. Whom does Sarangapani decide to kill? Does he succeed? That forms the story of the film.
Sarangapani Jathakam is written and directed by prolific filmmaker Indraganti Mohana Krishna of Ashta Chamma and Gentleman fame. His last few films did not work at the box office and he was written off by critics. So, he took some time off and has made a comeback with a comedy caper—a genre that is his strength—and delivers this time around. Sarangapani Jathakam is about a man who believes blindly in astrology. The film is about how a man is forced into crime and how he gets out of it in a fun manner.
Right from the beginning of Sarangapani Jathakam, the conflict is established solidly. The concept of the hero wanting to kill someone to eradicate the issue in his horoscope is showcased through various episodes. The victims he chooses and how he fails time and again are showcased hilariously. The major aspect of Sarangapani is the clean comedy that works for the most part. Vennela Kishore plays Priyadarshi's sidekick, and the comedy he generates is amazing in the film. It is his chemistry with Priyadarshi and how the duo evokes fun scenarios in the film that make for an entertaining watch.
Story-wise, the film does not have a great plot and is also predictable for the most part. The pace of the film is also a bit slow in the second half, and a few cinematic liberties are taken. But it is the fun dialogues and characters that keep you invested in the film. Each character has a purpose, and the vintage taking of Indraganti is visible for the most part. The contemporary usage of dialogues, scenarios, and cool characters in the second half makes things quite interesting. The climax has been established on a hilarious note and ends the film on a high.
But one of the biggest drawbacks of the film is the hero's character. He is an astrology addict, and why he is so has not been established properly in the film. Such issues are overlooked in the script time and again.
Coming to the performances, Priyadarshi of Loser fame leads from the front. After playing a serious lawyer in Court-State vs. A Nobody, he takes a U-turn and showcases his fun side in Sarangapani Jathakam. Priyadarshi is quite desperate to come out of the mess he created, and he showcases this aspect superbly throughout the film.
Vennela Kishore's witty dialogues and screen presence were missing all these days, but the Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes actor is back with a bang and is the unsung hero of the film. His character is neatly used in the setup, and Kishore is a laugh riot. Yet another comedian, Viva Harsha, gets a top-notch role and is hilarious in the second half. The comedy evoked by Kishore, Viva Harsha, and Priyadarshi in the second half is the major asset of the film.
Veteran actors Naresh and Tanikella Bharani were good in their respective roles. Roopa Koduvayur, who plays the female lead, is neat in her role. Vivek Sagar has composed the music, and his songs nicely gel into the narrative. The camerawork, especially the hotel setup in the second half, has been showcased quite well. As told earlier, dialogues are the major strength of the film and keep you hooked.
Sarangapani Jathakam is a film that is high on comedy and entertainment. Indraganti Mohana Krishna is back with a bang, and Priyadarshi scores yet another hit in his career. The comedy caper looks routine in the promos, but how it is narrated with good fun moments makes all the difference.
On the whole, Sarangapani Jathakam is a clean comedy that has some hilarious performances. Barring the routine story and a few cinematic liberties, the film has enough moments that entertain you till the very end and make for a breezy summer watch.
