Su from So movie story: When Ashoka’s (JP Thuminad) fascination for the village beauty potentially lands him in trouble, his ploy to slip out of it becomes an even bigger mess, what with the entire village scared stiff of him and the ‘spirit’ residing in him – Sulochana from Someshwar. He keeps up the ruse for a while, but when they track down Sulochana’s next of kin, he realizes that ‘she’ needs to step up and deliver.

Su From So movie review: JP Thuminad needed only a little over two hours to give the Kannada film industry a lesson in how to slip in a powerful message without ever breaking away from the core agenda – entertain audiences. Calling his Su from So a horror comedy would be a disservice, with the likelihood of it being equated with sub-par movies in the genre that Kannada cinema has churned out in the not-so-distant past. JP’s film is a comedy drama that does revolve around a spirit; one that causes just the right mayhem, but also leads the protagonist to truly understand the harm caused by ‘simple’ pleasures he and many others like him enjoy – all in absentia.

What makes JP’s film an absolute delight is its setting and the characters he introduces, all of who - whether it is Shaneel Gautham’s Ravi Anna, Deepak Rai Panaje’s Sathisha, Prakash Tuminad’s Chandra, Mime Ramadas’ Yadhu, the actors playing his parents, Sandhya Arekere's Bhaanu, and everyone who brought Marlur alive – are a blast. Slightly exaggerated for cinematic purpose, but never over the top. These are the kind of people you’d expect to see in such a village.

The hero of Su from So is, undoubtedly, its writing – a trick employed to get the hero out of a mess, blows up in his face at first, but then he harnesses its ‘power’ to do right by someone. And what makes it a winner is its message – one that will make you think the next time you buy a bar of Lux. The best part is that this is delivered with humour dropped in casual conversations that will have you guffawing all the way. A bunch of supremely talented artistes ensuring they are not only seen and heard but also have audiences craving for more of that.

That’s also where JP the filmmaker shines – in giving each of his cast their moment(s) under the spotlight. So much so that by the end of the film, you wonder if Ravi Anna was the hero or Sulochana. Raj B Shetty, who backed JP’s vision, is in the film, but not in the role that was widely speculated. He deserves a lot of love for believing in JP’s story and never once trying to steal the latter’s thunder.

Cinematographer Chandrashekar’s visuals go a long way in enhancing the immersive quality of the film, as does the music, credit for which is shared by Sumedh and Sandeep Thulasidas. Put together, the cast and crew ensure that this is one trip to the theatres that you won’t regret.

Su From So movie verdict: JP Thuminad delivers a good, supremely enjoyable movie and that, in all honesty, is what matters. When you’ve been swimming in a sea of mediocrity and worse, this is the wave that you want to ride. More power to JP, Raj and their teams!
