Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil movie plot:

Jeevarathnam (Jiiva) is a local politician in the village panchayat. He is entrusted with ensuring that the wedding festivities at Ilavarasu’s (Ilavarasu) house proceed smoothly. Everything goes according to plan until a death occurs at the neighbouring house of Mani (Thambi Ramaiah). Soon, both families insist that their respective rituals, the wedding and the funeral, take place at the exact same time, with neither willing to compromise. As chaos and conflict escalate, Jeevarathnam finds himself at the centre of the turmoil, tasked with resolving the standoff and restoring harmony.

Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil movie review:

Heights. They are an integral part in Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil. Be it Jeeva climbing up the ladder to coax a man from burning his house down, or a deep pit into which a groom jumps into after finding his lost bride. Or even a water tank that stands as a testimony of both life and death, heights take the story of Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil both to an emotional range and laughter riot without making you feel a jarring difference. The extremes aren’t felt odd, and the situations are created organically. To top it off, a Jiiva who is in his best elements uplift Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, a film that brings the flavour of Malayalam cinema without dissolving the rootedness of Tamil nativity.

Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is a drama that takes place in a village, somewhere where everyone knows each other’s stories and tragedies. So naturally, when a panchayat leader like Jeeva is called to oversee both a wedding and funeral, he cannot take sides but only attempt for a compromise. Nithish Sahadev who helmed the Malayalam dysfunctional family drama Falimy, makes his Tamil debut with Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil. He ensures that there is enough flavour of Malayalam cinema; with the multi-character arc setup, the slow-build to the conflict, and how the things end up in a bizarre yet logical way. But at the same time, the film never gives up its Tamil roots either.

The comedy is grounded and simple, the quips that come out of it are natural and there is something earthy in how each of the characters are treated. For example, the groom Kaniappan who is travelling all the way along with his family to bride Soumya’s place, often calls her amid the plethora of tensions that the latter is put into, only to talk about his childish first world problems. As much as the duo is at no fault of theirs to react in their own ways, Kaniappan’s brother keeps instilling how much Soumya has to give up and leave her place after marriage and ask him to let her be with her family instead of constantly checking in on her. There is Jenson Dhivakar’s local politician, Jeeva’s rival from the opposing party, who wants to create a ruckus and gain something out of it. His antics too are zeroes at the right amount of villainism needed to drive the story forward. Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is enjoyable with these aspects as it naturally builds the world with these characters around. Their introductions in instalments, evolve organically in Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil and that makes the film a lighter watch with surprises popping up when least expected.

Certainly, one of the strengths of Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is Jiiva, who takes up a role that is almost like his second nature. His Jeeva requires him to crack jokes, show emotions, educate people, get stuck amid quarrels, and even be the saviour of the day; yet nothing feels like a staple heroism fed to audience. Instead, the protagonist is moulded in such a way that Jiiva as Jeeva organically fits into the world of these villagers who have their own quirks. The writing uses the best of multi-character arc, and with each of them being playing by actors hand-picked for their roles, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil ends up as feel-good, light-hearted entertainer that tucks in little emotions and good intentions without going overboard.
