In ancient times, there was a demon named Sankarasur who spread fear and chaos across Earth. He troubled sages and blocked yajnas (Vedic rituals). Distressed by this, the Devas prayed to Goddess Sankranti, an aspect of Shakti (Devi Durga), to save the world. The Devi incarnated on Sankranti day, battled the demon, and finally destroyed Sankarasur — restoring dharma and peace. This victory of light over darkness became the reason why Sankranti is celebrated as a powerful tithi for cleansing and blessings. After his death, his wife Karidin (or Karidinika) tried to avenge him, and she was also defeated on the next day — which is observed in some regions as Karidin or Kinkrant (especially in Maharashtra).
