Based on Janette Oke's eponymous book from her Canadian West series, When Calls the Heart is an American Western romance drama series developed by Michael Landon Jr. The plot follows Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher who goes through a culture shock when she gets her first class assigned in Coal Valley. She realises that life in a small mining town is filled with challenges, as a recent explosion has killed more than a dozen of the town's miners, forcing the widows to take over the mines. One of the widows, Abigail Stanton, who heartily welcomes Thatcher, attempts to help her adjust to frontier customs. The series features performances from Erin Krakow, Daniel Lissing, Lori Loughlin, Martin Cummins, Jack Wagner, Pascale Hutton, Kavan Smith, Paul Greene, Andrea Brooks, Chris McNally, and Kevin McGarry, among others.
