England Test captain Ben Stokes has shared his thoughts on Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli’s sudden decision to retire from Test cricket. Kohli, widely regarded as one of the modern greats of the game, announced his retirement via an emotional Instagram post on May 12, stunning fans and players alike just weeks before India’s high-profile Test tour of England.

In a heartfelt revelation, Stokes disclosed that he immediately messaged Kohli upon hearing the news. “It’s going to be a shame not playing against him this time,” Stokes said. “I love playing against Virat. We've always relished the contest because we share the same mindset on the field – it's a battle.”

India is scheduled to play a five-match Test series in England beginning June 20, and Kohli’s absence will leave a noticeable void in what was expected to be a fiery encounter. The 36-year-old batter has been a pivotal figure in India’s Test line-up, particularly known for his aggression, consistency, and charisma. His retirement from red-ball cricket marks the end of an era for Indian cricket.

“What India will miss is his fighting spirit, his competitiveness, and his desire to win. He’s made No. 18 his own – we might never see it on the back of another Indian shirt. He’s been pure class for such a long time,” Stokes told India Today.

The English skipper also took a moment to reflect on Kohli’s remarkable skills, highlighting one shot in particular. “One thing I’ll always remember about Virat is how hard he hits the ball through the covers – that cover drive will live long in the memory,” Stokes said.

While Kohli has often faced criticism for his performances in England, Stokes believes the former Indian captain has proven his mettle on English soil. “He’s done well in England too. He deserves all the accolades. No doubt, there’s been plenty of praise for him in India and here as well,” he added.

Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket has triggered an outpouring of tributes from around the world. With over 8,800 runs in 113 Tests, including 29 centuries, he leaves behind a legacy defined by passion, resilience, and excellence.

As England prepares to host India in what could have been another thrilling chapter in the Kohli-Stokes rivalry, the cricketing world will have to come to terms with the fact that one of its most iconic figures has stepped away from the red-ball format.

Kohli’s departure also signals a period of transition for Indian cricket, with a new Test captain and squad set to be announced on May 24. As for Stokes and the England team, the summer Test series will move forward – but with a touch of nostalgia and an unmistakable absence.
