India’s campaign in the Asia Cup 2025 has been lit up by the explosive opening partnership of Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. While Gill brings calmness and control to the crease, Sharma has introduced a fearless edge that has put opposition bowlers under pressure from the very start. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently narrated an incident that perfectly highlights the duo’s dynamic.

During a clash against Bangladesh, Gill reminded Sharma that the team had already collected 15 runs from the over and suggested he should simply rotate strike on the final delivery. Sharma acknowledged the advice but decided otherwise. Instead of taking a single, he launched the ball straight into the stands for six, sending a loud message about his intent.

For Pathan, this moment captured the essence of Sharma’s mindset. He described the youngster as someone who thrives on aggression and carries a “killer instinct” that keeps bowlers guessing.

"Abhishek and Shubman, their combination that has gotten set is praiseworthy because you need a batter who complements you at the other end. You repeatedly hear them when they speak, stitch a partnership, and explain things to each other, asking for a single to be taken after a four is hit," Pathan said on SonySports.

A blend of caution and aggression at the top-order by Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma

The Gill-Sharma pairing has turned into one of India’s biggest assets in the tournament. Gill plays the role of a steady accumulator, rotating strike and holding the innings together, while Sharma takes the initiative to attack from the outset. This balance between composure and aggression has made India’s starts both stable and explosive.

Sharma’s numbers back his fearless approach. He has already amassed over 240 runs in just five matches at a staggering strike rate beyond 200, making him the tournament’s standout performer. Gill’s contributions may not be as eye-catching, but his ability to anchor one end allows Sharma the freedom to unleash his natural game.
