In the final and crucial Group B match of the Asia Cup 2025 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka will have to chase a target of 170 runs to keep their winning streak alive. However, they can still qualify for the Super Fouurs if they score 101 runs in the second inning.

What happened

Afghanistan’s innings was a rollercoaster, with early wickets falling quickly. Sri Lanka’s pacer Nuwan Thushara was lethal, taking three key wickets inside the powerplay and reducing Afghanistan to 40 for 3.

Afghanistan tried to rebuild the innings but kept losing wickets at regular intervals. However, the game-changer for them was Mohammad Nabi’s explosive knock.

Nabi smashed an incredible 60 off just 22 balls, including five sixes in the final over by Dunith Wellalage, taking Afghanistan’s total to a fighting 169/8, the highest first innings total of Asia Cup 2025.

Sri Lanka’s qualification scenario

Sri Lanka, who won the first two games, will now have to ensure they score 101, and that will take them to the Super Four stage. However, if they score 101 and then lose the match, in that case, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan both will qualify for the next stage.

If Sri Lanka go on to win the match and chase down 170, Afghanistan will be knocked out of the tournament, and that will mean Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will qualify from Group B, which was set to be the group of death.
