During the Australia vs India first ODI match on Sunday, Nitish Kumar Reddy has etched his name in Indian cricket history by becoming the first cricketer from Andhra Pradesh to represent India in all three formats of international cricket, Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I).

Reddy’s journey so far

Born and raised in Andhra Pradesh, Nitish Kumar Reddy rose through the ranks of domestic cricket with remarkable consistency and determination.

Andhra, traditionally not considered a powerhouse in Indian cricket, has produced limited players who have reached the international level.

Former Indian selector MSK Prasad first noticed Reddy’s talent during U12 and U14 state tournaments, urging him to hone his skills at the Andhra Cricket Academy in Kadapa. Reddy’s star truly rose in the 2016-17 Vijay Merchant Trophy, where he hammered 441 runs off 345 balls against Nagaland. He dazzled with the ball too, claiming 26 wickets and earning the title of ‘Best Cricketer’ in the U16 category.

2023 and 2024 changed NKR’s career

After getting picked by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2023, Nitish Kumar Reddy showcased his all-around ability for the franchise from Southern India. Soon, he was given the T20I cap in the home series against Bangladesh in 2024 at the New Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Gwalior.

Nitish batted with a strike-rate of 180.00 in that series, and Hardik Pandya’s unavailability in the Test format helped him get the Test cap in the Australia tour as well. Reddy went on to score 298 runs in the series, second second-highest by an Indian.

However, he had to wait for his ODI debut as he could not find a place in the ICC Champions Trophy squad. Reddy finally got his ODI cap during India’s 2025 tour to Australia. With that, he has now become the first player from his state to play for India in every format.
