Defending champions Australia will start their ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign against their arch-rivals, neighbour New Zealand, who have always been great competitors against them. In the second match of the tournament at Holkar Stadium in Indore, Australian captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and decided to bat first.

Healy, who is also the wicketkeeper for Australia, expressed confidence in her side despite some earlier warm-up games that did not meet expectations.
“We’ll have a bat. Just put some runs on the board and see what happens,” she said. Healy acknowledged a chance that conditions might improve later but noted this did not happen the previous night, indicating the best opportunity is now with the bat upfront.
“We played some really tough games of cricket in tough conditions. We're ready to go. The group is in a great place. We're looking at getting better at every single opportunity we get. Want to improve, want to take women's cricket forward,” Healy added.

The Australian squad includes key players such as Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Annabel Sutherland, Ashleigh Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Alana King, Kim Garth, and Darcie Brown.
Their strategy for the match involves deploying pure pace bowling, which has led to the exclusion of veteran fast bowler Megan Schutt.
However, Healy was quick to reassure that Schutt remains an important part of the team’s wider World Cup plans.

New Zealand’s captain, Sophie Devine, shared similar sentiments about their preparations and approach to the match. Although disappointed not to bat first, Devine showed no major concern about bowling first with a fresh wicket at the start of the tournament. “Would’ve had a bat as well. But fresh wicket, start of the tournament, not very concerned,” she said.
The New Zealand side features experienced players like Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer, with Bates humorously described as being around “73 years old,” highlighting her vast experience and leadership.
Devine emphasized the balanced nature of their squad and expressed pride in representing New Zealand. “Just grateful for the opportunity to come out here again and represent my country. That fills me with pride,” she said. She acknowledged that while results are important, the team’s spirit and support for one another remain the highest priorities.

“Would've had a bat as well. But fresh wicket, start of the tournament, not very concerned. I think we've got a great balance within the side. Experience through the batting order. Suzie Bates, around 73 years old, Georgia Plimmer, a really balanced group. Just grateful for the opportunity to come out here again and represent my country. Fills me with pride. Obviously, results are important, but what matters most to me is the people around me,” Devine said during the toss.
