Barcelona's dream of completing a historic treble is very much alive after they thrashed arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final. With that trophy secured, Hansi Flick and his squad now turn their focus to Europe, where an intense semi-final showdown with Inter Milan awaits.
The first leg of the Champions League semi-final will be played on Thursday, May 1, at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Barcelona. The Spanish giants booked their place in the last four after a solid win over Borussia Dortmund, while Inter Milan battled past Bayern Munich in their own quarter-final clash.
Barcelona and Inter have plenty of shared history in European competitions. They’ve met 16 times so far, with Barça winning eight of those encounters. Inter has come out on top just three times, while five matches ended in draws. Most recently, they faced off during the group stage of the 2022-23 season—Inter won their home leg narrowly, and the return match in Italy ended in an exciting 3-3 draw.
One of the most memorable ties between the two clubs came back in the 2009-10 season. That’s when José Mourinho’s Inter side knocked out Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in the semi-finals, winning 3-2 on aggregate. Despite that heartbreak, Barça has always had the upper hand at home when facing Inter, winning five out of six meetings in Spain and drawing the other.
The second match-up of the first leg kicks off on Wednesday at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium (12:30 AM IST, Thursday). The game might prove to be a crackerjack of a contest between the two teams. The first match was won by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) against Arsenal by 1-0. So hold up your nerves and gear up for an exciting match-up.
