Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain of India’s ODI team, is currently in a critical but stable condition recovering in a Sydney hospital after sustaining a severe injury during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025. While taking a spectacular catch to dismiss Australia’s Alex Carey, Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage. Medical scans later revealed that the injury was more serious than initially thought, a laceration to his spleen, causing internal bleeding. Iyer was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following fluctuations in his vital signs, a situation described by sources as potentially life-threatening at the time.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been closely monitoring his condition. In their official statement, they confirmed that while Iyer remains under treatment, he is medically stable and recovering well. An Indian team doctor has stayed back in Sydney with Iyer to oversee his day-to-day progress, in close consultation with medical specialists from both India and Australia.
The treatment and observation period is expected to last at least a week, depending on how quickly the internal bleeding resolves and his overall recovery progresses.
This injury is a major blow to the Indian cricket team, especially since this series was Iyer’s first outing as the ODI vice-captain, deputizing for Shubman Gill.
Before the incident, Iyer was in excellent form, having scored 496 runs in 11 matches this year, including five half-centuries, showcasing his critical role as a stable middle-order batsman. His absence from upcoming matches, including the South Africa ODI series, will pose a challenge to India’s batting lineup.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the statement from BCCI said.
