The Indian cricket team is all set to play more ODI matches in the upcoming year ahead of the World Cup 2027. This is a good news for the fans since they'll get to watch more of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the upcoming years. India, who won the T20 World Cup 2026 recently, will now be looking forward to preparing more for the ODI World Cup.
India last lost the marquee event in the 2023 finals against Australia. Since then, they have won all the ICC events except the WTC finals 2025. Kohli and Rohit have taken retirement from T20Is and Tests and are focusing on the ODIs. Hence, they will also be looking forward to playing more matches this season.
According to reports, India already have a number of ODI series lined up after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup and the IPL 2026 season. The team is expected to host Afghanistan for a three-match ODI series, followed by another white-ball series against England in July. These matches will form the first phase of India’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup campaign.

Another key development could take place during India’s tour of New Zealand later in the year. The tour was originally planned to feature two ODIs, but discussions are reportedly underway to expand the ODI leg of the series. If approved, India could play two additional 50-over matches, providing Kohli and Rohit with valuable game time before the next World Cup cycle intensifies.
The idea to increase ODI fixtures has reportedly been supported by several cricket boards. Countries such as New Zealand, Sri Lanka, England and Ireland have expressed interest in scheduling more ODI matches with India during upcoming tours. The BCCI is believed to be open to these requests, as they align with the team’s long-term preparation plans.
