Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been dealt an early blow ahead of IPL 2026, with their newly signed replacement pacer Spencer Johnson set to miss the initial phase of the tournament. The Australian left-arm fast bowler, who was brought in as a replacement for the injured Nathan Ellis, is expected to be unavailable for the first three weeks, delaying his much-anticipated debut for the franchise.

Johnson’s absence comes at a time when CSK are looking to rebuild and strengthen their pace attack for the new season. Known for his ability to generate pace and bounce, the Australian quick was seen as a key addition to the squad. However, his delayed arrival means the team management will need to rely on their existing bowling resources in the early matches.

"Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have picked a player replacement for injured Nathan Ellis for the upcoming TATA Indian Premier League (IPL). Spencer Johnson will join CSK for INR 1.5 crore as a replacement for Ellis. Johnson, who has played 13 international games - 5 ODIs and 8 T20Is - for Australia and has 18 international wickets against his name, has previously represented Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL," the IPL's official statement read.

How CSK can manage without Spencer Johnson early on

Despite the setback, CSK have historically shown resilience in dealing with squad challenges. The franchise has often relied on strong team balance and experienced players to navigate difficult phases. In Johnson’s absence, the responsibility will likely fall on bowlers like Mukesh Choudhary, Khaleel Ahmed, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, and others, to lead the attack and deliver consistent performances.

The team management could also use this opportunity to test bench strength and give chances to emerging players. IPL seasons often witness breakout performances from relatively unknown players, and CSK might look to uncover a new match-winner during this period.

Once Johnson joins the squad later in the tournament, he is expected to provide a significant boost to the bowling unit. His inclusion could add variety and depth, especially in conditions that favour pace. For now, the Super Kings will focus on managing the early phase effectively and ensuring they remain competitive until their full-strength squad is available.
