During the India vs West Indies series at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica, Tagenarine Chanderpaul's batting performance might not have left a significant impact. However, it reminded people of his appearance on the big screen.
As the son of the legendary West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Tagenarine scored 12 runs off 44 balls before being bowled by R Ashwin. Unfortunately, the Windies struggled and were all-out for just 150 runs on Day 1 of the Test match.
Watching Tagenarine bat against India triggered memories of his acting debut in the Bollywood movie '83, which preceded his Test debut for the West Indies. The film depicted Team India's journey under the captaincy of Kapil Dev (played by Ranveer Singh) and their victorious 1983 World Cup campaign. '83 featured several sons of former Indian and West Indian cricketers portraying their fathers or other prominent players.
Although Tagenarine had limited screen time in the movie, he portrayed the character of West Indies middle-order batsman Larry Gomes. During the 1983 World Cup, Gomes was the second-highest run-scorer for the West Indies team, trailing only the legendary Vivian Richards. Gomes amassed 258 runs in 7 innings at an impressive average of 64.50.
Talking about the game against India, Windies won the toss and opted to bat but could not capitalise on it. Alick Athanaze was the highest run scorer with 47 followed by Kraigg Brathwaite who scored 20. Many West Indies batters did not even reach the double-digit score.
As for India, skipper Rohit Sharma and debutant propelled India to a commanding position. At the end of Day 2, the Men in Blue had reached an imposing total of 312/2, firmly establishing their dominance.
Virat Kohli joined Jaiswal after the side lost Rohit (103) and Shubman Gill (6). While Jaiswal runs away from scoring 150, Kohli is batting on 36 and India has posted 312 runs with a 162 runs lead.
