Shubman Gill's rise as a batter is undeniable in the ongoing India vs England Test series, but his recent stint as captain has come under fire. Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin opined about Gill's captaincy and his batting performance in the recently ended fourth Test match, which ended in a draw.
The credit goes to Gill, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja for playing an incredible knock to save the match. While the results were in favor of England after they took a 311-run lead, Indian batters made sure that they weren't going home empty-handed. Ashwin praised Gill's batting performance but wasn't very satisfied with his captaincy. On his YouTube Channel, 'Ash ki Baat', he talked about the match and the young captain Shubman Gill.
"What a fabulous hundred by Shubman Gill! A lot of questions were raised about Shubman Gill by a lot of people. A lot of people had hatred against him. That is absolutely ridiculous. He has once again proved, he worked on his technique. He didn't have a great match as captain; the way he brought Washington Sundar late was a huge tactical mistake, but that happens. He is a young captain and will only learn by making mistakes, and I hope he learns faster," said Ashwin.
For someone like Gill, who was heavily criticsed for his performance after the Lord's test, walking out to the middle and scoring a match-saving century is a huge deal. The amount of pressure he had, from a captain's perspective was immense. But keeping everything aside, Gill did his best as a batter. Since this was his first series as a captain, this was a learning curve for him.
"He [Shubman Gill kept all things aside and came out as a batter and played a leader's knock. It was truly a leader's emergence knock. He scored in Birmingham, got a big score when India were 0-1. He scored at Headingley as well. All that is great, but we lost at Lord's and a lot of people had raised questions about his batting. When everything was down, he walked out to the middle, complete control, and batted beautifully. Yes, he got a couple of reprieves, but I thought he was fabulous," added Ashwin.
