Shubman Gill’s steady rise in Indian cricket continues to draw attention, and comparisons. After his confident performance in the recent T20I clash against Australia, a former India cricketer has likened the young opener’s composure to that of Virat Kohli. Gill’s fluent 37* in the first T20I not only helped India post a strong start but also reinforced his reputation as one of the most technically assured batters in the current lineup.

Shubman Gill’s composure and growing reputation

According to the former player Dinesh Karthik, Gill’s calmness under pressure and ability to construct an innings quietly before accelerating reminds many of Kohli’s early T20I days.

Gill’s elegant stroke play and effortless timing have become hallmarks of his batting. His ability to adapt to different formats and conditions, from Tests to T20Is, has made him one of the most dependable young batters in Indian cricket. With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, his recent innings against Australia showcased not only his form but also his readiness for bigger stages.

However, the competition for top-order spots in India’s T20 side remains fierce. The former player pointed out that Gill’s consistency has kept players like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the starting XI, a sign of the healthy competition within the squad.

"This is what Virat Kohli does in ODIs. You'll never know where he is till you look at the scorecard. You'll think he has only been around sometime and he'll be on 45," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

"I am sure he is aware of the kind of players he is keeping out, starting from Sanju ( opening), Yashasvi and the rest like Ruturaj and KL Rahul, etc. It's not easy to be a T20 player right now because you need to be consistent, exceptionally skilled and almost play a match-winning knock every second or third game. That's the kind of depth India has," he added.
