Meghalaya’s Akash Kumar Choudhary etched his name in the book of records after scoring the fastest fifty in first-class cricket history. In 11 balls he smashed the half-century, breaking Leicestershire's Wayne White’s record. In 2012, White scored a fifty in 12 balls against Essex. Moreover, Choudhary scored an unbeaten 50 off 14 balls, helping Meghalaya post 628 for 6 and declare the innings.
The 25-year-old achieved the record against Arunachal Pradesh on the second day of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025 in Surat. He slammed eight sixes in a row and joined an elite club that previously included only Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri for smashing six sixes in an over in first-class cricket.
After breaking multiple records, Akash Kumar Choudhary opened up about his emotions on entering the elite clubs in an exclusive interview with OTTplay. “I'm feeling great obviously. Happy for my family, my state “Meghalaya” and all of those who have been there in my journey as a cricketer,” said Akash Kumar Choudhary.
With the IPL auctions coming up, the right-handed batter mentioned that he would be happy to play for any team. “It’s (becoming an overnight sensation) unreal for me and it’s a special feeling definitely but at the same time not thinking much about it. It is very difficult to pick one team (IPL) because there are many players I like and they are in different teams. Coming from Meghalaya I will be happy to play for any team,” added Akash.

Akash has featured in 31 first-class matches so far, a journey that reflects years of relentless dedication, discipline, and hard work. His recent record-breaking knock stands as a testament to the resilience and determination that have defined his cricketing career. When asked about his preparations for the ongoing Ranji Trophy, he gave a subtle yet an impactful answer that can be an inspiration for the young players who are starting their journey in any sport.
“Nothing different, just a more calm practice session and giving my best in every session, enjoying my batting a bit more and in nets this time batting with a good intent helped me. Obviously there are challenges in everything we do but I take it in a positive way and try to learn from it and improve as a player,” said Akash.
In 31 first-class matches, scored 503 runs at an average of 14.37 with two half-centuries. Moreover, he has taken 87 wickets in first-class cricket at an average of 29.97, 37 in List-A (average 29.24) and 28 in T20s (average 26.25). Akash Kumar Choudhary’s record-breaking feat has not only brought Meghalaya cricket into the spotlight but also showcased the growing depth of Indian domestic talent.
