After India’s ODI series defeat against Australia, former captain Kris Srikkanth has voiced concerns about head coach Gautam Gambhir’s approach to team selection. The ex-opener believes Gambhir’s tendency to make frequent and hasty changes in the playing XI could affect the team’s rhythm and confidence. Speaking after the third ODI, Srikkanth urged the management to maintain consistency and avoid unnecessary experimentation, especially with major tournaments on the horizon.
Srikkanth pointed out that while Gambhir’s aggressive style and willingness to try new combinations have positives, such frequent changes can unsettle players and disrupt team chemistry. He emphasized that ODI cricket, unlike T20s, requires a stable core group that understands each other’s strengths and roles.
The former selector also highlighted that India’s middle order has been in constant flux since the start of the series, making it difficult for batters to settle into defined positions. He argued that establishing a consistent batting order and bowling combination will be key for India’s long-term success, especially in away conditions where adaptability takes time.
Srikkanth acknowledged Gambhir’s passion and tactical acumen but urged him to balance innovation with patience. He noted that too many adjustments, such as rotating bowlers frequently and experimenting with batting order, have led to inconsistent performances, particularly in crunch moments.
"India have been at the two extremes under Gambhir. The results have been either deadly or extremely horrible. That's why he shouldn't keep changing things hastily. It's important to keep the right combination. India luckily escaped in England without especially Virat Kohli and also Rohit Sharma. Of course, we did brilliantly in England overall, especially Shubman Gill and the bowlers," said Srikkanth on his YouTube channel.
