India’s red-ball preparation methods are under the spotlight after reports suggested Shubman Gill put forward a proposal aimed at strengthening how the Test side readies itself for series. The idea centres on creating longer, dedicated preparation windows before Test assignments, giving players time to adjust technically and mentally before competitive action begins.
The discussion has gained traction amid India’s mixed results in recent Test campaigns, particularly when touring overseas. With players frequently moving between formats, the gap between white-ball cricket and Test matches has often been minimal. Gill’s reported input appears to address that exact challenge, the need to slow things down before entering the most demanding format.
"I think it is an insane call from a leader. There cannot be a better call than that. He is taking charge of Test cricket in that sense. It is very good. Before a Test series, a team needs a preparation of at least two weeks. We are playing Test series to win the WTC. So to win that, we cannot win by just playing Test cricket. You have to plan, prepare, and build. You need to give that respect to Test cricket as a board and a team. I am very happy that he brought it up," he said on his YouTube channel.
As of now, the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 looks like a far fetched dream for India considering their performance in Test cricket. After the Ashes 2025, Australia are on top with seven wins in eight games and with a PCT of 87.50. The rest of the teams have not played as much games as India and England have.
Hence, they still have a good chance of qualifying than India. The Men in Blue have won just four out of nine games and have a PCT of 48.15. They are at the sixth position of the points table. Meanwhile, England are below them with three wins in ten games and a PCT of 31.67. It will be a difficult job for India to move ahead in the points table if they keep losing Test matches in the future. The only way to get into top two is to win consistently and hope for other teams to lose.
