India’s team selection and batting strategy came under sharp criticism after the 2nd T20I against Australia, with former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth openly questioning the team management’s decision to promote Harshit Rana ahead of established all-rounder Shivam Dube. The move came during a crucial stage of India’s innings when rebuilding was key after early wickets.
However, Srikkanth believes this change in the batting order not only disrupted the team’s rhythm but also reflected a lack of clear planning in how India approached the chase. His comments have since sparked debate among fans and analysts about India’s batting structure and experimentation in the ongoing T20I series.
Speaking on his YouTube show, Srikkanth did not mince words, saying that India’s batting order against Australia lacked logic. He questioned why Rana, a relatively inexperienced player, was promoted ahead of Dube, a proven finisher who has been consistent in recent games.
The former India opener suggested that such decisions could harm players’ confidence, especially those expected to deliver in crunch situations. While Rana did score a gritty 35, Srikkanth argued that his slow innings cost India vital momentum, as Dube’s power-hitting was underutilized.
He further added that modern T20 cricket demands clarity in roles, and India’s constant chopping and changing were counterproductive.
"You are demoralising the Dube's ability. And is Harshit Rana such a big player? He scored 35 but it was a scratchy knock. Only that one six was good other than a square cut. At 35 off 33, he ate up too many deliveries. The problem is Abhishek Sharma missed out on the strike a lot because of Harshit Rana. So many times he took a single off the last ball of the over. In that partnership of 47 deliveries, Harshit Rana played 33 and only 14 for Abhishek Sharma."
