Former India seamer Irfan Pathan claims that, had he been fully fit, Riyan Parag would have been the perfect like-for-like replacement for Washington Sundar.

India’s ongoing ODI series against New Zealand encountered fresh blow when all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out with an injury that he sustained during the first match of the series, leaving a notable gap in the team’s balance. Sundar’s absence was confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which named Ayush Badoni as his replacement ahead of the second ODI in Rajkot.

The situation has sparked debate among former cricketers and fans alike about the best way to maintain India’s squad strength in his absence. Former India seamer Irfan Pathan added fuel to the discussion by asserting that Riyan Parag, had he been fully fit, would have been a like-for-like replacement for Sundar’s role. Pathan pointed out that while Badoni’s selection is fair given his recent performances, Parag’s all-round capabilities, batting prowess combined with useful spin bowling, make him a logical choice in place of Sundar’s multi-dimensional skill set.

"I would congratulate Ayush Badoni for getting a spot. He has done well for India A but Riyan Parag would have been a like-for-like replacement player. He is a proper batter and bowling is secondary for him. Parag drives the game forward but his shoulder injury means he is not available," said Irfan Pathan on his YouTube channel.

An experienced batter is a must: Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan also spoke about how Shreyas Iyer should have been in the team after Tilak Varma's injury. He is one of the best players and is in form as well. With skipper Suryakumar Yadav not being in form, the Indian management should have thought well before picking up the replacement for the players.

"It will be interesting to see how Team India handle these injury concerns. The upcoming series against New Zealand will make us realise how important are these two players. New Zealand is not that strong a side. They will surely pose a challenge but the challenge India will face due to their injuries will be clear to see. I feel India should draft in Shreyas Iyer for Tilak Varma. Iyer also plays at the same spot and plays spin exceptionally well. If Suryakumar Yadav is struggling, an experienced batter is a must. Shreyas is experienced and a leader, so need to look elsewhere," he added.
