As India prepares for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, former India coach Sanjay Bangar has publicly expressed strong support for veteran batsman Rohit Sharma, emphasizing that the opener fully deserves a spot in India’s 2027 World Cup squad. Bangar highlighted Sharma’s experience, adaptability, and dedication to the team, noting that his leadership on and off the field has been invaluable to India’s white-ball setup.
Bangar underlined that Rohit Sharma’s approach to the game goes beyond personal milestones. He praised Sharma for consistently putting the team’s interests first, particularly in setting the tone during the initial overs of an innings. According to Bangar, this selfless approach has often laid the foundation for India’s strong starts and consistent performances in limited-overs cricket.
"Rohit Sharma wanted to set a different template. When India weren't able to cross the last step in 50-overs cricket, he took huge responsibility on himself about how he would bat in the first 10 overs. He has done a lot of things for the team's benefit," the former India all-rounder responded.
The former coach also emphasized that age should not be a barrier when a player continues to perform at a high level. He suggested that Sharma’s experience, coupled with his current form, provides balance to the batting lineup, offering both stability and match-winning capability. Bangar said, “If he maintains fitness and form, there is no doubt that Rohit deserves a place in the World Cup squad.”
