30 Indian stadiums have hosted a Test match

Across India, almost every state and union territory has one or two cricket stadiums. However, only a few venues have had the honour of hosting Test matches, regarded as the game’s highest and purest format. As of late 2025, India boasts 30 such venues, with Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati becoming the newest addition after hosting its maiden Test against South Africa in November 2025.

The legendary venues

Some stadiums have become synonymous with Indian cricket itself.

  • Eden Gardens, Kolkata: Established in 1864, it is often called the “Mecca of Indian cricket.” With 43 Tests played up to 2015, Eden Gardens has been the stage for numerous historic matches steeped in emotion and drama. Eden Gardens has hosted the most number of Test matches in India.
  • MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai: Known as Chepauk, it has hosted cricket since 1934 with 35 Tests to its name. The ground has been a fortress for Indian spinners and a witness to cricketing feats.
  • Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi: Hosting 36 Tests since 1948, this stadium has seen India battle and triumph on home soil against the world’s best. Anil Kumble's historic 10-wicket in an inning came on this ground.
  • Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai: Since 1975, Wankhede has been home to many iconic moments, including Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell. It has hosted 27 Tests and features lively pitches and packed crowds.
  • M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru: With 25 Tests played since 1974, this venue combines a youthful vibe with a rich cricketing legacy, hosting nail-biting contests that have thrilled fans across eras. Its waterlogging system is one of the best in the world.
  • Bombay Gymkhana Ground, Mumbai: Hosted India’s first-ever home Test in 1933. Although after the establishment of Wankhede Stadium, it has not hosted any Test matches.
  • Emerging and modern Test venues

    Modern stadiums across India have added new chapters to their cricket story:

  • Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad: Renowned as the world’s largest cricket stadium, it was renovated recently and has hosted 16 Tests since 1983. Its vast capacity allows tens of thousands of fans to bask in the cricketing spectacle.
  • Mohali’s I.S. Bindra Cricket Stadium: Since 1994, Mohali has posed a stern challenge for visitors and offered fans memorable Test moments. It is considered one of the most scenic cricket stadiums in the world.
  • Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha (Nagpur), Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (Hyderabad), Holkar Stadium (Indore), JSCA Stadium (Ranchi), and Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium (Rajkot) are newer venues that are helping spread top-class Test cricket to more cities.
