Indian cricket entered a new phase in July 2024 when Gautam Gambhir was appointed head coach of the Indian men's cricket team. Since taking charge, Gambhir has led the team across all three formats — Tests, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) — with a tenure marked by contrasting outcomes. While his stewardship in the limited-overs formats has brought considerable success, his record in Test cricket has posed significant challenges. Here is a detailed series-by-series breakdown of Gautam Gambhir’s record as India’s head coach.

Undefeated in T20 internationals

Since Gambhir’s appointment, the Indian T20I team has been a force to reckon with. India has remained undefeated in T20I series under his coaching, showcasing a blend of youthful energy and strategic acumen. The journey began with a clean sweep of Sri Lanka in their 2024 tour, winning all three T20 matches. This momentum continued on the 2024 tour of Bangladesh, where India again emerged victorious with a 3–0 series win.

The tour of South Africa in 2024 tested the team slightly more, with India winning three matches but conceding one loss. Nevertheless, the series ended 3–1 in favour of India. In the 2025 Asia Cup, India maintained their unbeaten streak by claiming the title and adding another trophy to Gambhir’s coaching credentials.

India just lost 2 T20I games under Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the team.

Disappointing stats in Tests

Despite these white-ball successes, Gautam Gambhir’s tenure in Test cricket has been notably challenging. The Indian team played 15 Tests under his leadership, winning only five, losing eight, and drawing two, resulting in a modest win rate of about 33%.

His first series as Test coach was promising, as India clean-swept Bangladesh 2–0 at home in 2024. However, the high point was followed by a disappointing home series whitewash against New Zealand, marking India’s first such defeat on home soil in over a decade. This upheaval marked a low in Gambhir’s red-ball coaching record.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series of 2024-25 against Australia further underscored the difficulties, with India losing 1–3. The Australian bowlers exposed holes in India’s batting lineup, and tactical decisions faced scrutiny.

However, the team managed to draw the 2025 England tour 2–2, with stand-out performances from emerging players hinting at potential rebuilding.

Mixed stats in ODIs

Gambhir’s journey in ODIs began with a setback during the 2024 Sri Lanka tour, where India lost the series 0–2 with an additional tied match.

This unexpected loss stirred debates about the team’s direction under Gambhir. However, the Indian team quickly regrouped, embarking on a winning streak that culminated in an emphatic triumph at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

India won all five matches in the tournament, capturing the trophy for the first time since 2013.

But after the success in the Champions Trophy, the team faced a disappointing series defeat against Australia in Australia in 2025.
