The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially confirmed a significant boost in prize money for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, underlining its commitment to the longest and most traditional format of the game. As anticipation intensifies for what’s being dubbed “The Ultimate Test”, cricket fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting the clash between Australia and South Africa at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, set to take place from June 11-15.

The winners of the WTC Final will now receive an unprecedented US $3.6 million, a staggering increase from the US $1.6 million awarded in the previous two editions. Even the runners-up will walk away with more than US $2.1 million, exceeding the past winners' purse, further highlighting the ICC’s dedication to rewarding excellence in Test cricket.

In comparison, New Zealand and Australia, who triumphed in the 2021 and 2023 finals, respectively, each received US $1.6 million, with the losing teams earning just US $800,000. The latest figures mark more than a twofold increase in total prize money, a move that is being hailed as a milestone moment for red-ball cricket.

To build momentum ahead of the final, the ICC has released a promotional video featuring a mix of legendary and current cricket stars. The video aims to reignite the passion for Test cricket and reinforce its status as the game's purest form. By combining nostalgia with contemporary flair, the campaign hopes to draw fans from all generations into the excitement.

This edition’s WTC cycle has been anything but predictable. South Africa sealed their final berth with impressive 2-0 series wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan at home, finishing with a commendable 69.44 percentage points. Reigning champions Australia followed closely with 67.54 points, demonstrating consistent form throughout the competition. India, despite leading the standings for a significant period, ultimately ended third with 50.00 percentage points.

The final promises a riveting showdown between two formidable sides – Australia aiming to defend their title and South Africa chasing their first-ever WTC crown.

Jay Shah commends the journey and finalists

ICC Chair Jay Shah lauded the journey of the tournament and the two teams set to compete for the coveted Test Mace.

“We have witnessed a very interesting third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, where the finalists were decided only towards the end of the competition. The championship has showcased remarkable performances from players of different teams, culminating in a final between these two exceptional squads, a true celebration of cricket,” Shah said.

He further expressed confidence in the quality of the upcoming contest: “I am sure spectators at Lord’s, along with fans tuning in from all over the world, will be treated to some top-class cricket in this revered format when Australia and South Africa take the field less than a month from now.”
