In what could be said as one of the greatest T20 World Cup games, if not the greatest T20 game ever, South Africa narrowly defeated Afghanistan in the Group D clash of ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 in a double super-over thriller in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Here are the records which were broken during the South Africa vs Afghanistan match in Ahmedabad.
During the first innings, Quinton de Kock etched his name into the history books by becoming South Africa's leading grass scorer in T20 World Cup history. The left-handed opener, who scored a composed 59 off 41 balls, now has a total of 737 career runs in T20 World Cup history, surpassing the legendary AB de Villiers (717 runs).
This match also marked the first-ever double super over in the history of the T20 World Cup, which helped them join a very exclusive list of international matches which reached a second tiebreaker.
Tristian Stubbs of South Africa hit a final ball six to take the first super over into another one. And then, Afghanistan nearly pulled off a blinder to score 24 in the final four balls of the second super over as Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit three consecutive sixes. However, they fell short by four runs to eventually hand South Africa full points in Ahmedabad.
During that chase, Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup match for Afghanistan (7).
In the first super over, Afghanistan scored 17 as Azmatullah Omarzai
scored 16 off 5 against Lungi Ngidi. But, with 7 needed off the final ball, Tristian Stubbs hit a six against Fazalhaq Farooqi to take the match into the second super over.
In the second super over, South Africa scored 24, and with Afghanistan losing Mohammed Nabi in the first ball, the Afghans looked out of the race. But, again, with 24 needed off the final four balls, Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit three sixes in a row to make the game more interesting.
Maharaj then bowled a wide, making the equation 5 needed off the last ball and a boundary to take it to another super over.
The India vs Pakistan match and the group D winner might decide who India might end up facing in the later part of the tournament, if they end up reaching there. So, the India vs Pakistan match becomes an important one to look for as well.
