Kolkata: West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd claimed the 10th hat-trick of the T20 World Cup alongside his maiden five-wicket haul to help the Caribbean side beat Scotland by 35 runs at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Saturday. Before Shepherd's historic spell, Shimron Hetmyer's 64 off 36 helped West Indies to 182/5 in the first inning.

Scotland started well, but Hetmyer proved to be too good.

Scotland captain Richie Berrington won the toss and asked West Indies to bat first. West Indies captain Shai Hope and Brandon King started slowly as Scotland bowlers bowled the hard length to not allow them to free their arms.

After a slow start, the West Indies got into trouble by losing captain Shai Hope in the 9th over. But just when Scotland were hoping for a great first inning with the ball, came the Shimron Hetmyer storm.

The powerful left-handed batter started middling the ball from the word go and hit the spinners well to find the boundaries easily. Hetmyer quickly reached his fifty in just 22 balls - the fastest fifty by a West Indian in the T20 World Cup. Among those 22 balls, six went for huge sixes into the 18,000 crowd present at the ground.

However, when it looked like the West Indies would score over 200, Scotland started pulling things back with disciplined bowling. After Safyaan Sharif dismissed Hetmyer on 64 off 36 balls, West Indies lost the paddle from the accelerator. Brad Currie was the pick of the bowlers with 23 for 2 in 4 overs as Scotland restricted West Indies to 182/5 in the first inning.

Scotland fought hard but only to fall short

During the chase, Scotland started poorly as they lost three quick wickets within the first powerplay. Michael Jones, Michael Jones and George Munsey departed early, but then it was all about the fourth wicket 78-run partnership between captain Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce.

Everything was going great for Scotland, but only till captain Richie Berrington could not hit a poor short ball from Jason Holder in the 14th over, as he was caught at the deep point by Shamar Joseph. Then, with 64 needed off 36 balls, West Indies spinners tightened things up as Tom Bruce was trapped at the front of the stumps by Gudakesh Motie.

Shephard takes 4 in one over

When the match was nearly over, Romario Shepherd created history by claiming the second hat-trick of his T20I career. He dismissed Matthew Cross, Michael Leask, and Oliver Davidson to claim the hat-trick, and he eventually made it four in a single over by dismissing Safyaan Sharif to claim his maiden T20I five-wicket haul.

Scotland were eventually bowled out for 147 as Shepherd finished with 20 for 5 in just three overs.
