India’s ODI tour of Australia began on a disappointing note as the visitors slumped to a 7-wicket defeat in the 1st ODI at the Perth Stadium on Saturday. Batting first after losing the toss, India managed a below-par 136/9 in 26 overs in a rain-affected match. The game was later reduced under the DLS method, with Australia comfortably chasing down the revised target of 131 in just 16.2 overs.

The Indian batting unit faltered from the start, undone by sharp seam and bounce from the Australian pacers. Virat Kohli’s first-ever ODI duck in Australia stunned fans, while skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just 8 runs. The top order crumbled to 25/3 within the powerplay, with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc exploiting the new ball to perfection.

Australia dominate after India’s batting collapse

Despite the early wickets, middle-order contributions from KL Rahul (38 off 31) and Axar Patel (31 off 38) helped India cross the 100-run mark. However, tight bowling from Hazlewood (2/20), Starc (1/22), and Kuhnemann (2/26) ensured India never recovered momentum. Harshit Rana, who replaced Prasidh Krishna, remained wicketless but bowled with decent control amid tough conditions.

In response, Australia’s openers came out with intent. Mitchell Marsh smashed 46 off 52, while Josh Philippe played a fluent 37 off 29, setting the tone for an easy chase. Despite a couple of quick wickets by Washington Sundar (1/14), the result was never in doubt. Australia coasted to victory with 131/3 in 21 overs, sealing a clinical 7-wicket win.

The match underlined Australia’s home dominance and India’s struggles to adapt early in overseas conditions. The visitors will need a quick turnaround before the 2nd ODI, especially from their senior batters, to keep the three-match series alive.
