In an important clash such as the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final, the threat of a cloudy weather or rain, is real. In India, or any venue for that matter, anticipating a clear sky is not also possible and hence, the International Cricket Council (ICC) always keeps a reserve day for important matches, especially the finals.

India will clash against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final on March 8 in Ahmedabad. The teams have performed well in the tournament and are a just a match away from scripting history. If India win, they'll become the first team to win the title thrice and the first to win it in their own backyard.

Meanwhile. this will be the first title for New Zealand in the T20 World Cup history. Hence, either ways, something historical is going to happen on Sunday. But what happens if the match is washed out? That's a valid and crucial question to be asked at this point.

What happens if match is washed out?

The ICC has kept a reserve day for the final game which means that if the game is washed out on the first day, the match can take place on the next day. Before that, the match will have 120 minutes extra apart from the alloted time for atleast ten overs of game to be played. If nothing can happen on day 1, the game shifts.

Despite playing on a reserve day, if it still rains and the match is abandoned, the title will be shared between the two teams as per the rule. This has happened once in Champions Trophy 2002 between India and Sri Lanka as the match was abandoned due to rain. The fans will hope for a full 40-over game since it's the T20 World Cup final.
