As India get ready for the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand this Sunday, March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the selection meeting within the team is likely to be a high-stakes chess match. While the core of the team will surely stay intact, the "mystery" of Varun Chakaravarthy has become the immediate talking point after his expensive spell of 1/64 in the semi-final.

While Varun Chakaravarthy entered the tournament as the No.1 T20I bowler in the world and did well in the early stages of the tournament, his recent dip in form since the Super 8 has opened the door for someone like Kuldeep Yadav.
If India goes on to maintain their two-spinner disciplinary blueprint alongside Axar Patel, replacing Varun with Kuldeep can offer several advantages for the Men in Blue.
Kuldeep has a prolific record at the Narendra Modi Stadium. His capacity to use flight and the larger square boundaries (often exceeding 68m at the Narendra Modi Stadium) makes him a realistic fit for this stadium.
Moreover, as Ravichandran Ashwin recently stated, teams have begun to play Chakaravarthy more tactically. Kuldeep’s traditional left-arm wrist spin can deliver a different kind of "unorthodox" challenge that New Zealand’s middle order, including the likes of Glenn Phillips, has floundered with in the past.

Now the discussion will take place right after the Men in Blue get to know on which turf the Indian team will face the Kiwis in the final.
Since the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has 11 centre pitches, including both red soil and black soil pitches, the decision will depend on which pitch the game will be played on.
The black soil pitch tends to have more high-scoring games, like India's 234 vs. New Zealand, and this pitch generally is a flatter one with more reliable bounce. If this is the pitch, India might even consider dropping a spinner entirely for a third specialist like Mohammed Siraj, who has done well for the Gujarat Titans in the past at this venue.
Now, the red soil, as we all know, offers more turn and grip, and it sometimes cracks after the Gujarat heat as well. On this pitch, the trio of Axar, Sundar, and either Varun or Kuldeep can be an option for Team India. Adding Washington Sundar into the playing XI can also help India in their batting lineup, but in that case, India might have to risk benching Shivam Dube, who has been tremendous with the bat.
It is unlikely that India will use three spinners and use Sundar in the middle. The chances are that either Varun or Kuldeep will play, and as per Ravi Ashwin and other experts, India would like to go on with Varun Chakravarthy in the final as well.
