In the ongoing Test series between India and the West Indies, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma continued his remarkable form with another sublime innings. Leading from the front, the 'Hitman' played a scintillating knock that contributed significantly to India's challenging 1st innings total. The cricketer displayed his aggressive batting prowess at the Queen's Park Oval, Trinidad, adding to India's dominance in the series against the West Indies.
The skipper scored a brilliant century in the series opener and continued his performance on Day 1 of the 2nd Test which helped him surpass MS Dhoni on an exclusive list. He eclipsed former Indian skipper Dhoni and became the fifth-highest run-getter for India in international cricket.
Rohit Sharma has scored 17,298 runs in 443 international matches for India, smashing 44 centuries and 92 half-centuries across all formats. The Indian opener upstaged Dhoni, who scored 17,092 runs for India in 523 matches.
Rohit Sharma-Yashasvi Jaiswal scales new heights:
Not just this, the newly-formed Indian opening pair of Rohit and Jaiswal got a good start for India, putting up a second-century partnership in two innings.
Prior to Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal's outstanding 229-run partnership in the previous Test at Dominica, the last time an Indian pair recorded a century stand was back in January 2022. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal achieved a partnership of 119 runs against South Africa in Johannesburg.
Following that, the combinations of Rohit Sharma with either KL Rahul or Shubman Gill were considered potential opening pairs, but the results were not entirely convincing.
Now with the 139-run alliance on Day 1 of the 2nd Test, Rohit and Jaiswal have the joint-most century partnerships in an away series. They tye with the pair of Sunil Gavaskar-Chetan Chauhan in 1979 against England, Virender Sehwag-Aakash Chopra in 2003/04 against Australia and Sehwag-Wasim Jaffer against West Indies in 2006. All of these pair have two-century partnerships in the same series.
Rohit and Jaiswal end India's 24-year-long wait:
It is also the 1st time in 24 years that an Indian opening pair has notched up consecutive century partnerships in the same series.
The last time this happened was way back in 1999 when Sadagopan Ramesh and Devang Gandhi did against New Zealand, where they added 137 runs in India's second innings in the Mohali Test, followed by 162 in Kanpur.
Rohit and Jaiswal's stand also makes them one of the five pairs with two consecutive century partnerships. Sehwag and Murali Vijay lead the charts with three in 2008/09.
Their partnership has created history as the first Indian pair to record 100 partnerships in consecutive innings in the Caribbean. Additionally, their opening stand in Port of Spain, Trinidad, stands as the highest ever by an Indian pair at the venue.
The all-time highest opening stand at Port of Spain belongs to Geoffrey Boycott and Dennis Amiss, who forged an incredible partnership of 209 runs in 1974. Following them, the Australian pair of Arthur Morris and Colin McDonald had an exceptional opening stand of 195 runs in 1955.
