India began the New Zealand tour of India 2026 on a positive note, registering a hard-fought four-wicket victory in the first ODI at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara. Chasing a competitive target in excess of 300, the hosts held their nerve in a tense finish to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

Batting first after losing the toss, New Zealand produced a disciplined batting effort on a good surface. Devon Conway (56) and Henry Nicholls (62) formed 117-run partnership, putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. But, Harshit Rana came into the attack and got the breakthrough by dismissing Nicholls. The middle order ensured momentum did not dip, guiding the visitors past the 300-run mark. Daryll Mitchell led the way, scoring 84 off 71 balls, including five boundaries and three sixes.

India’s chase began with intent, but early wickets came in as Rohit Sharma departed on 26 off 29 balls. However, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill continued the run-chase, forming a partnership of 118 runs. Gill slammed a half-century in his comeback series from an injury.

Kohli anchors, Rahul finishes in tense chase

Virat Kohli (93) once again proved his value in ODI cricket, playing a measured knock under pressure. He missed a well-deserving century by seven runs but helped India get past the tough phase. India managed to get across the line with four wickets in hands. With the game finely poised in the last ten overs, KL Rahul (29) took charge of the chase.

Showing calmness and smart shot selection, Rahul found boundaries at crucial moments and rotated the strike effectively with Harshit Rana who scored 29 off 23 balls, including two boundaries and one six. His presence ensured India stayed ahead of the equation despite the pressure applied by New Zealand’s bowlers.
