The curtain is set to fall on the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the grand finale scheduled to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the venue and date following a series of high-level meetings held on Tuesday, May 20.
This year’s tournament has been anything but routine. The IPL 2025 calendar underwent a major reshuffle after a 10-day suspension triggered by cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The diplomatic strain not only disrupted the tournament's continuity but also affected player availability across several franchises, compelling the BCCI to rework its match schedule to accommodate the lost time.
Despite the hurdles, the league has maintained its competitive edge. Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket venue by seating capacity, will once again serve as the battleground for the championship clash. This marks the third consecutive year the iconic stadium will host the IPL final, following its debut in 2022 and a successful reprise in 2023. It will also host Qualifier 2 on June 1, making it the centerpiece of the season’s concluding chapter.
For the initial playoff matches, the BCCI has opted for the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. The new venue will host both Qualifier 1 on May 29 and the Eliminator on May 30. The selection was influenced heavily by weather forecasts, with the northern region expected to be relatively drier amid increasing rainfall across other parts of the country. The BCCI’s decision reflects a strategic effort to minimize rain-induced disruptions during the crucial knockout phase.
As the tournament nears its climax, the competition remains fierce. Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have already secured playoff berths. These teams are now jostling for the top two positions, which offer the all-important advantage of a second shot at reaching the final.
Meanwhile, the race for the final playoff spot remains open, with Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) still in contention. With nine league matches left, both teams will need to deliver consistent performances to keep their hopes alive.
