As the league stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 nears its conclusion, five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have made strategic additions to their squad ahead of the high-stakes playoffs. On Tuesday, May 20, the franchise officially announced the signings of England's Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson, along with Sri Lankan all-rounder Charith Asalanka, as replacements for Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton, and Corbin Bosch, who are set to depart for national duties after MI's final league fixture on May 26.

With MI looking forward to entering the playoffs beginning May 29, the exit of three overseas players posed a significant challenge for the team management. However, the timely acquisition of Bairstow, Gleeson, and Asalanka ensures depth and balance in the squad as they gear up for a potential sixth title.

Jonny Bairstow, a seasoned campaigner in white-ball cricket, joins MI for a reported fee of ₹5.25 crore. The explosive wicketkeeper-batter brings with him vast IPL and international experience and is expected to add firepower to Mumbai’s already strong batting lineup.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Bairstow took to Instagram, writing:

“Thrilled to share that I’ll be joining the Mumbai Indians for the remainder of the IPL season! These decisions are never straightforward—especially given how much I’ve enjoyed leading Yorkshire this year. I’m incredibly grateful to the club for their understanding and continued support and look forward to getting stuck back in on my return.”

He added: “This is a fantastic opportunity, and I’m excited to contribute to MI’s campaign. Can’t wait to get started and experience the energy of Mumbai! See you soon! #MumbaiIndians”

Joining Bairstow is England fast bowler Richard Gleeson, who has been signed for ₹1 crore. Known for his sharp pace and variations in the death overs, Gleeson offers an additional edge to MI’s pace attack, which already features Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan middle-order batter Charith Asalanka has been roped in as a direct replacement for Corbin Bosch. Signed for ₹75 lakh, Asalanka adds spin-bowling utility and left-handed batting depth to the team – qualities that could prove crucial on the slower pitches likely during the playoffs.

As the team prepares for a critical playoff run, head coach Mark Boucher and skipper Hardik Pandya will be banking on the new recruits to deliver in pressure situations. With Bairstow expected to slot into the top order or take the gloves, and Gleeson and Asalanka offering tactical versatility, MI looks well-equipped for the battles ahead.
