Irfan Pathan opines on 'workload management' of pacers during crucial series

The debate around workload management has once again taken center stage in world cricket. India's former cricketer Irfan Pathan spoke about the bowlers and the workload management topic that's going on around. Following India’s recent Test series against England, Pathan voiced concerns over how elite bowlers are being handled, particularly in high-profile contests. His remarks also turned the spotlight on Pat Cummins, the Australian skipper, who faces a critical decision ahead of the Ashes later this year.

Pathan argued that while workload management is a useful tool in the buildup to big tournaments, it should not dictate decision-making once a marquee series gets underway. For Pathan, the distinction is clear, resting and monitoring players before a series is logical, but in the middle of a contest like the Ashes, fans and teams deserve nothing less than complete commitment.

"I just have one thing to say, you would have heard recently that Pat Cummins will skip many games to manage his workload for the Ashes. But will Cummins manage his workload during the Ashes? My question is that only. By all means, manage workload, yes. SENA countries are tough places to go and win. There your main bowlers must play as many games as they can. During the series, a top series, you will not get the result if you look to manage workload there," said Irfan Pathan in a special interaction organized by Sony Sports Network.

The issue surfaced prominently during India’s tour of England, where Jasprit Bumrah was rested for two out of five Tests. Pathan suggested that limiting India’s strike bowler in such a crucial series cost the team momentum. He questioned whether Australia might make the same mistake with Cummins, who has previously missed games to manage his recurring back issues. 

Cummins’ case is particularly relevant because he is not only Australia’s premier fast bowler but also their captain. His ability to lead from the front with long, aggressive spells often sets the tone for his side. Pathan hinted that if Australia tries to overprotect him in the Ashes, it could impact their ability to dominate England. Pathan’s message is simple: workload management has its place, but when the moment arrives, stars like Pat Cummins must be unleashed without hesitation.
