The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are in a dilemma ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 since the return of Pat Cummins seems unlikely. The star player is still recovering from injury and is yet to get a medical clearance from the physio. Hence, the franchise will have to look beyond Cummins as their captain since the season is fast approaching.

Meanwhile, a report by Times of India suggests that SRH management is looking at Ishan Kishan for the captain’s post ahead of the tournament. Kishan, who joined the team in 2025, had played for Mumbai Indians (MI) before. He has an ample amount of experience in the T20s and has also led Jharkhand to a title victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025.

Hence, the management are likely to settle for Kishan as this season’s captain if Pat Cummins fails to comeback. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma might act as Kishan's deputy in the tournament. Both the players are in great form and have performed for SRH in the previous season. Hence, having them as captain and vice-captain is likely to be a good decision by the management.

Ishan Kishan’s impeccable IPL 2025 performance

The left-handed batter has always been a trustworthy player in the IPL even when he was playing for MI. When he came to SRH, he got the freedom to play a more attacking match and hence, he went on to smash his first century in 2025. He slammed an unbeaten 106 runs in 47 balls against Rajasthan Royals, which included 12 sixes.

His century worked in a winning cause as they defeated the Royals. Overall, he scored 354 runs in 14 matches at an average of 35.40. He batted in the top order and scored runs consistently. Now, the management is likely to give him the team’s responsibility.
