The Italian Open 2024, the clay court ATP Masters Tournament seen widely as a practice run before the French Open, is currently in its Round of 16 stage. While several big names, like Andy Murray, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Stan Wawrinka, had withdrawn earlier citing injuries, top seed Novak Djokovic was sent packing in round three, while 10-time champ Rafael Nadal didn’t even make it that far, departing in round two.

This is the first time in the last two decades of the tournament’s history that either Djovokic or Nadal is not in the quarter-finals. At the start of the 2024 tennis season, it was said that it Nadal would hang up his racket at the end of it, but he has now teased that a return to Italy is possible. The round of 16 is being played out at the stadia in Rome on May 14, with the quarter finals scheduled for May 15, semi-finals on May 17 and the final on May 19 in the Men’s Singles. The Women’s Singles final will be on May 18. At the time of publishing, Zhizhen Zhang, Alejandro Tabilo, Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz and Nicolas Jarry had advanced to the round of 8, with defending champion Daniil Medvedev playing Tommy Paul for a spot in the quarter finals.

In the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek became the first to confirm a semi-final spot, while Aryna Sabalenka, Danielle Collins, Victoria Azarenka, Jelena Ostapenko, Coco Gauff, Qinweng Zheng, will play the remaining quarter-final matches on May 15. The match schedule is as follows, Coco Gauff vs Qinweng Zheng, Jelena Ostapenko vs Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka vs Daniella Collins.
