From fights to a record 19 yellow cards to the game entering the penalties, Argentina vs Netherlands quarterfinal game at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar had all the drama needed for an exciting clash. After a thrilling 2-2 draw that went into extra time, Argentina advanced to the semi-finals by defeating the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties.

While Lionel Messi and his squad celebrated the win in style, the Dutch were seen standing on the field, not knowing what to do.

As the match came to an end, Dutch footballer Marten de Roon took to social media to speak about the Argentina nightmare and how Messi turned out to be one for their side.

"When I was a kid I heard my dad talk about the nightmare of Argentina. The World Cup back in ‘78. In my time as a footballer, Messi was the dream of every player. Today, I played against the dream that became a nightmare. Congrats to Argentina, but I’m so damn proud of this squad," the footballer said with a picture of the Netherlands squad.

Talking about the clash, in the first 30 minutes, the Dutch controlled roughly 60 percent of ball possession and there were no shots on target.

However, Lionel Messi provided a fantastic assist in the 35th minute of the game. Messi made excellent use of the space available after spotting Nahuel Molina. He passed the ball to Molina, who latched onto it and scored past goalkeeper Noppert to make it 1-0.

Marcos Acuna was fouled by Dumfries in the Netherlands' penalty area, which gave Argentina a penalty in the 71st minute. Messi converted the penalty kick in the 73rd minute to add to his tally of 10 goals for Argentina at the World Cup. He went on to tie with former Argentina star Gabriel Batistuta for the team's most goals ever.

While it looked like Argentina was taking charge, Wout Weghorst's goal in the 83rd minute gave the Netherlands a chance to tie the score. Argentina led the game 2-1, but they were on the verge of some tense moments in the closing stages.

The horror was not yet over as 10 minutes of stoppage time was added and the Dutch were looking for an equalizer. They got one in the 100th minute when the Netherlands got a free kick, right on the edge of the box. Weghorst scored the goal from the free kick making the scoreline 2-2.

The extra time did not yield any goals but with tense moments from both sides which later saw the game enter the penalties.

Argentina made sure to give their all as they entered the semifinals, with the scoreline reading 4-3 in their favor.
