The fourth Test of the five-match Test series between England and India is underway in Manchester. This is a do-or-die Test for the Indian side, who are trailing 1-2 in the five-match Test series. The Shubman Gill-led side can’t afford a further loss in the series, as it would mean that they would lose the series. However, first, they’ll have to win the ongoing fourth Test, as a win would keep them alive in the series.

England skipper won the toss and decided to field first, in the hopes of taking advantage of the overcast conditions in Manchester. The Indian team had a great start with the bat and looked strong before a serious injury sustained by their star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant put them into a dangerous situation in the match. The left-handed batter looked in great touch, batting aggressively as he scored 37 runs off 48 balls before he tried to play a reverse shot off Chris Woakes. However, he couldn’t connect the ball with the bat, and it struck his right foot. He looked in immense pain as blood started to seep through his shoe.

Pant wasn’t even able to put weight on his right foot, and India’s physio had to rush to the field. It looked like a few medications would be enough for Pant to get relief from the pain, but he was barely putting his foot on the ground and was later carried away out of the field on a golf buggy. BCCI confirmed that the batter was taken for scans. However, recent reports confirmed a fracture, and a six-to-eight-week rest has been suggested to him.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) owner, Sanjeev Goenka took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) account and wished Pant a speedy recovery. Notably, LSG bought Pant for a staggering ₹27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. “Wishing you a speedy recovery, Rishabh. You’re a fighter, and we know you’ll come back stronger.” Goenka tweeted.

As Pant was retired hurt, Ravindra Jadeja came to bat in his place. And we all know how brilliant he was during the third Test, probably the lone warrior who stood unbeaten; however, he couldn’t save his team from a loss. The star all-rounder is expected to carry India’s innings to a bigger score. He is accompanied by another all-rounder, Shardul Thakur, who replaced Nitish Kumar Reddy, following his knee injury.

At the end of Day 1 of the fourth Test, India are 264/4 with Jadeja and Thakur playing on 19 runs each. Washington Sundar will be the next batter, followed by debutant Anshul Kamboj and then the tailenders. So, all the hopes are now on Jadeja to hang up in the middle for long.
