Australia welcomes Glenn Maxwell back as it names an updated squad for the upcoming T20I series against India, with a clear focus on preparing key players for the looming Ashes series starting November 21. Maxwell, who was sidelined with a fractured wrist sustained during bowling practice, will return for the final three matches of the T20I Series, signaling Australia's intent to balance immediate T20 success with long-term Test readiness.

Squad Changes for the T20I Series

A notable surprise selection is 20-year-old Western Australia speedster Mahli Beardman, who could make his international debut.

Beardman, a standout in Australia’s U19 World Cup-winning campaign earlier this year, has limited senior experience with just five List A matches and two Big Bash appearances.

The squad changes reflect a strategic rotation prioritizing players’ recovery and form ahead of the Test series. Returning to the squad are Glenn Maxwell (games 3-5), Josh Philippe (all games), Ben Dwarshuis (games 4-5), and the rookie Mahli Beardman (games 3-5).

In contrast, Josh Hazlewood will be available only for the first two matches before returning to the Sheffield Shield to hone his red-ball skills, alongside Sean Abbott, who exits after game 3. Both Hazlewood and Abbott are slated to strengthen New South Wales in their intrusion against Victoria in a key Sheffield Shield contest from November 10.

Changes in ODI squad

Marnus Labuschagne was released from the squad.

The ODI squad for the third ODI also saw shifts with Jack Edwards and left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann recalled, while Marnus Labuschagne, previously included due to a last-minute injury to Cameron Green, returns to Queensland's Sheffield Shield side for vital preparation.

Josh Philippe, added to the ODI group due to Josh Inglis’s calf injury, will now join the T20 squad as Inglis is expected to return for the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Ashes preparation starts for Aussies

The Ashes preparations are clearly weighing on selectors’ minds. With stalwarts like Pat Cummins recovering from a back issue and Cameron Green working back from summer surgery, the squad requires careful management and rotation, particularly among pace bowlers.

Sean Abbott, Michael Neser, and Brendan Doggett are among those pushing for spots to boost Australia's bowling depth.
