In a touching tribute to its cricketing greats, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Friday unveiled four newly dedicated sections at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, a venue that has witnessed countless historic moments in Indian cricket. But this day belonged to one of Mumbai’s own, Rohit Sharma.

From a young boy playing in the gullies of Borivali to standing tall as India’s captain and a five-time IPL-winning leader, Rohit’s story came full circle as the Divecha Pavilion Level 3 was officially renamed the Rohit Sharma Stand. The gesture wasn’t just a nod to his incredible achievements but a celebration of the journey that began right here in Mumbai.

The entire Mumbai Indians squad stood with their skipper, proud and emotional, as he was honoured at the stadium that’s been a second home to him for so many years.

MI owner Akash Ambani shared a heartfelt message, capturing what so many fans feel: “Rohit, congratulations. A young boy from Borivali, who now has a name on one of the most iconic venues in world cricket, Wankhede Stadium. From playing for Mumbai to leading India and being a legend for us at Mumbai Indians, your story inspires an entire generation. I can't wait to walk into our last home game this season and see your name on that stand.”

Rohit’s numbers are staggering: nearly 20,000 international runs, 49 centuries, and the only player with three ODI double hundreds, including a world-record 264. But what numbers can’t fully express is the calm, grace, and resilience he’s brought to the game. Under his leadership, MI has lifted five IPL trophies, making him one of the most successful captains in league history.

Sharad Panwar and Ajit Wadekar too honoured alongside Rohit

The Sharad Pawar Stand (Grand Stand Level 3) now carries the name of the former MCA President and veteran statesman who played a key role in modernising the stadium and bringing global tournaments like the 2011 World Cup Final to Mumbai.

The Ajit Wadekar Stand (Grand Stand Level 4) honours the late Indian captain who led the country to its first overseas Test series wins in England and the West Indies in 1971. Wadekar’s leadership sparked belief in a young cricketing nation.

The MCA Office Lounge has been dedicated to the memory of Amol Kale, the former MCA President, whose work behind the scenes helped support generations of Mumbai cricketers.
